Protecting our environment is every person's primary duty and thus even the government of India has taken the bold move to bring Bharat Stage VI (BSVI) emission norms into action. Well, it is the most rigid emission norms India had ever experienced to date.

Coming to the BSVI emission norms, it is very much related to Euro 6 emission norms. Some changes have been made specific to our country. The emission of NOx is nearly 60 mg/km while particulate matter (PM) is limited to 4.5 mg/km for petrol cars. When it comes to diesel cars, the norms are very strict. NOx emissions should be at 80 mg/km which is a reduction of 170 mg/km. HC emission also stands at 170 mg/km which is down from 300 mg/km. Coming to PM emission it is dropped from 25 mg/km to 4.5 mg/km. Levels of sulphurs and nitrogen oxide in fuel are also lowered in BS6 fuel compared to BS4 fuel (5 times lower).

While these were the stats, the worst affected were the manufacturers. Petrol cars prices have increased slightly by over Rs. 5000 to Rs. 25000. For example, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno BSVI prices range between 5.63 lakh to 11.51 lakh. Diesel cars are the worst affected. Many of the vendors have removed their diesel lineup itself while few upgraded them to BSVI. For example, the legendary Fiat 1.3 Multijet Diesel engine is discontinued. On the other hand, Ford Endeavour got a new BSVI compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine which replaced the old BSIV compliant engines.

Bike manufacturers have also updated their lineup to BSVI norms. But their prices have increased significantly more than the car. Most of the price increase range from Rs.8,000 to Rs.10,000.This is mainly due to the introduction of expensive equipment like fuel injection system and catalytic converter as most of the mass-market bikes and scooters had carburettor system. For example, Hero Passion Pro BSVI is priced at 64,990 for the drum-brake version which is an increase of Rs.7,890 from the BSIV version.

BSVI norms have come into effect this 1st of April 2020. Sales of vehicles had already dropped to a record low in the last financial year. And this year due to COVID-19 outbreak and these lockdowns would leave a major effect over the present financial year to the sales only with time we can say whether BSVI norms a successful mission or not.
